In Wild, Cheryl Strayed writes about the difference between deciding to do something and actually committing to it: “There was the first, flip decision to do it, followed by the second, more serious decision to actually do it.” Reflect on a time in your own life when you made a quick or casual decision that later required a deeper commitment. Describe what changed between the first decision and the moment you realized you truly had to follow through. What fears, challenges, or responsibilities became real once the decision was no longer just an idea?

prompt: i’ve been thinking of cutting my hair for a while now. at first it was just a thought because my parents are strict about what i do with my hair, but on the monday before school started i decided to follow through and make the cut. it’s a deep commitment because it’s something i’ve never done before, and i wasn’t necessarily attached to it but i knew it was something my mom would be questionable about. But im glad i decided to do it anyway.

summary: read half of the first chapter of wild and worked to find certain themes throughout the chapter.

reflection: learned how to find and analyze themes within a text.

Blake uses the chimney sweepers to expose how society ignores suffering. Reflect on a time when you noticed someone being treated unfairly or saw a situation that didn’t seem right. How does this experience connect to the emotions or ideas expressed in one or both poems?
